Robot Heimat is a metallic shelter for a garden robot. The goal was to design a lightweight and weatherproof shelter utilizing a new technology of metal-reinforcing membranes. The final structure is assembled from four electro-reinforced membranes with an average thickness of 1.5 mm nickel using high-strain elastane. The surface is additionally sandblasted and coated to achieve a uniform color. It is shown that the prototype can be reliably produced to millimeter tolerance, with parts that fill the available size of the electroplating bath. Without the need to apply any shaping operation on the metal elements, highly doubly curved panels with superior metallurgical properties can be realized using minimal energy and effort.
